Macadamia shelf-life: separate appearance, packaging and test evidence
Visual grading, packaging guidance and storage trials answer different questions. Older research remains useful when its date and limits stay attached.

A kernel’s appearance, its packaging specification and the evidence behind a shelf-life claim answer different questions. Buyers comparing macadamia products should keep those questions separate rather than treating an attractive sample as proof of storage performance.
Hort Innovation’s summary of project MC06010, published on 1 June 2010 and delivered by CSIRO Plant Industry, describes accelerated shelf-life tests of kernel deterioration. The project examined moisture, roasting and storage duration. Its summary reports no relationship between visual assessment and oxidative stability after its accelerated test. It also records variation within consignments and effects associated with cultivar and moisture. The 2010 findings describe that project, not the present condition of the industry.
The World Macadamia Organisation’s bulk-packaging guidance addresses a different part of the question: maintaining suitable conditions around the product. It recommends modified-atmosphere packaging for optimal shelf-life claims and a process for maintaining inner and outer packaging integrity. It also calls for shelf-life identification and recommends displaying storage conditions. A stated packaging specification is therefore useful information to check; it is not, by itself, the outcome of a storage trial.
For a practical purchasing review, request the evidence behind the claimed life as well as the product and packaging description. Identify what was tested, under which conditions, for how long and against which quality criterion. Keep visual grading, the conditions required during storage and a measured or modelled test result as separate parts of the assessment. This is an editorial reading of the sources, not a universal storage protocol.
These sources do not establish a universal shelf life for every macadamia product. The historical report is presented as research context; Hort Innovation warns that recommendations in its archive may be superseded. Its accessible summary does not supply the full experimental method here. No particular commercial pack or consignment has been tested for this article.
