SAMAC's felted-coccid research keeps biological release separate from laboratory progress
South African growers should distinguish promising biological-control research from an agent cleared for orchard release. SAMAC's 26 August update reports laboratory progress while retaining a testing requirement.

SAMAC says ARC and FABI have established stable laboratory colonies of macadamia felted coccid and its natural enemy, Metaphycus macadamiae. It says host-specificity testing must precede release, to assess effects on the intended pest and other insects. The update provides no release approval, orchard application schedule or measured field-control result.
The association describes an integrated programme combining biological control, monitoring, diagnostics, extension and education. It also says preventing movement into unaffected orchards remains important even where the pest is already present.
For growers, this is a research-status update rather than a replacement for diagnosis. SAMAC points to specialist diagnostic and extension support for identification and management decisions. Laboratory establishment should not be presented as proof that an orchard treatment is available or effective.
All programme claims here originate with SAMAC. We have not independently verified field efficacy or subsequent release status.
Corrections
- minorPublisher correction
The SAMAC possessive now uses an ASCII apostrophe in the English title and standfirst; facts, source date and original image remain unchanged.
Previously: The English title and standfirst contained replacement characters in the SAMAC possessive because of a publisher encoding error.
- minorPublisher correction
The lead image now uses a reference-grounded botanical illustration of the research target; the article text and scientific conclusions are unchanged.
Previously: The previous conceptual containment image did not show the pest signs discussed in this research-status article.
