South African macadamia exporters faced US tariff uncertainty in August 2025
The 30% reciprocal measure began on 7 August, after an expected 1 August start. Contemporary industry warnings described risks to demand, not measured losses.

South African macadamia exporters faced renewed uncertainty in August 2025 as the United States introduced a 30% reciprocal tariff measure for South Africa. A South African government statement dated 12 August recorded its start as 7 August. Farmer’s Weekly’s 16 July report had described an expected 1 August start; the subsequent customs guidance superseded that date.
US Customs and Border Protection’s 4 August guidance set the change for covered goods entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, from 12:01 a.m. EDT on 7 August. It described additional reciprocal duties, with exceptions including qualifying goods already in transit. The 30% figure should therefore not be read as a verified all-in duty on every macadamia shipment.
The concern for processors was demand. In a 16 July interview with Farmer’s Weekly, Global Macadamias chief executive Shane Hartman warned that tariffs above 10% would be unsustainable because they would curb US demand. This was an executive’s assessment before implementation, not an observed result.
The sources reviewed here do not measure subsequent sales, prices or losses attributable to the August measure.
This archive account covers the position reported in July and August 2025; it does not describe today’s tariff treatment.

Corrected the historical effective date to 7 August 2025, attributed contemporary demand concerns, disclosed the limits of shipment scope and outcome evidence, and replaced the generic diagram with labelled conceptual art. Original publication identity, dates, media 257 and history are preserved.
Previously: The archive headline and URL implied an August 1 tariff start and did not distinguish the additional reciprocal measure from shipment-specific duties or anticipated impact from measured outcomes.
